Traditional Cotswold house
Kitchen Architecture had originally designed the living space in the client's London home so when she decided to renovate her Cotswold property, she approached us again. As it is a traditional Cotswold house the client was keen to create a homely, country ambience. She wanted the kitchen as a contrast to this, whilst still complementing the pieces of furniture, antiques and luxurious fabrics and furnishings that they already owned and had chosen.
The new kitchen forms a central point in the busy, main living area. The island provides interaction directly overlooking the family living area and onwards out into the garden. On a practical level the island is very easy to use and effectively creates two zones within the kitchen: the core cooking area with a flush gas hob and large family sink, centred on the space; and the family living area where the toaster and boiling water tap and breakfast bar are positioned. This allows children and family members to come and go within the kitchen, without clashing with the main preparation space. The island also offers lots of hidden storage and the stainless steel worktop provides an ideal prep area, being heat resistant, hygenic and easy to clean.
The high-gloss, white finishes with recessed handles, stone and stainless steel work surfaces are a clean, powerful contrast to the architecture of the house and demonstrate how a strong contemporary design can sit very happily alongside antiques and traditional furnishings.
